2015 Chevrolet Silverado and Other Chevy/GMC Trucks with 6.2L Engine to Get Eight-Speed Transmission

2015 Chevrolet Silverado and Other Chevy/GMC Trucks with 6.2L Engine to Get Eight-Speed TransmissionThe 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and other Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs running on a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine will be getting a new standard transmission for the coming model year.

It was earlier in 2014 when the Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission made its debut on the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and Corvette Stingray, albeit as an optional part.  Prior to that, it was available on the Cadillac CTS VSport.  Now, truck and SUV buyers would be able to get the longitudinal eight-speed automatic as standard for 2015 models.

The new transmission is quite similar in dimensions and weight to the 6L80 six-speed automatic, and has a 7.0 overall gear ratio spread.  This is a wider ratio than the six-speed in order to produce a higher first gear for more intensive towing purposes.  The 8L90 is also capable of a lower rear axle ratio, which would lower engine revolutions per minute during highway driving.

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon Denali and GMC Yukon XL Denali trucks with 6.2-liter V8 power would all get the eight-speed automatic as a standard transmission, once production on these upcoming models starts in Q4 2014.  Fuel economy is supposedly improved on the 6.2-liter engine, though official estimates from the EPA have yet to be released.  Still, a modest increase over mileage figures on the six-speed automatic should definitely be expected.
