If word on the street is anything to go by, the Grand Theft Auto franchise could soon face its biggest challenge to date. Former Rockstar President, Leslie Benzies, is said to be in the process of developing a game that could rival GTA Online, having founded ‘Royal Circus Games Limited’ and begun working on ‘Time for a New World’.
It might not have the catchiest of working titles, but the pedigree this guy has behind him means we could be looking at something quite spectacular.
If you’re unfamiliar with Benzies, he’s the chap we have to thank for much of what brought the world the GTA titles from GTA 3 to GTA 5. His departure from Rockstar Games was somewhat on the unfriendly side, having filed a $150 million lawsuit over the parent company with regard to unpaid royalties.
He took part in eight of the company’s most important and successful projects, including the record-breaking GTA 5 and GTA Online.
Along with accusing Rockstar, Rockstar North, and Take-Two of withholding royalty payments following his termination, the lawsuit also directly accuses Sam Houser and Dan Houser of conspiracy to con him out of rightfully-owed earnings.
As the legal battle drags on, it’s now thought that we could be seeing the first outing from Benzies’ new company sooner rather than later. While details are thin on the ground, rumor has it that it could have the kind of depth, detail and appeal to deliver a hammer-blow to GTA Online.
